USDT on TRC20, ERC20 or Solana: Which Network Should You Use?
USDT is a single token that exists on several blockchains. The coin is the same, but the network is different, and sending it on the wrong network is one of the most common ways people lose money. This guide explains how the main three compare.
The same coin on different networks
When you see USDT (TRC20), USDT (ERC20) or USDT (SOL), the part in brackets is the network the tokens live on. A wallet address on one network is not valid on another, even when the address looks similar. Always pick the same network on both the sending and the receiving side.
USDT on Tron (TRC20)
- Typical fees: low, but paid in TRX or consumed as energy. A wallet with zero TRX may not be able to send USDT.
- Speed: fast confirmations, usually under a minute.
- Addresses: start with a capital T.
- Common use: exchange withdrawals and everyday transfers, because of the low cost.
USDT on Ethereum (ERC20)
- Typical fees: paid in ETH and often the highest of the three, especially when the network is busy.
- Speed: usually a minute or so, depending on gas.
- Addresses: start with 0x and are shared with other EVM networks, so be careful which network you pick.
- Common use: DeFi and larger transfers, where wide support matters more than cost.
USDT on Solana (SOL)
- Typical fees: very low, paid in SOL.
- Speed: typically a few seconds.
- Addresses: long base58 strings.
- Common use: fast, cheap transfers where both sides support Solana.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the network your destination wallet or platform supports. That is the deciding factor.
- If both work, a low-fee network usually saves you money on small amounts.
- Keep a little of the native coin (TRX, ETH or SOL) in the sending wallet to pay the network fee.
Mistakes to avoid
- Sending USDT on a different network than the deposit address expects.
- Forgetting that the fee is paid in the native coin, not in USDT.
- Pasting an address for the wrong network because it "looks right".
Swapping stablecoins
ShadowEX supports USDT on TRC20, ERC20 and Solana, USDC on ERC20 and Solana, and DAI on ERC20. The network is always shown next to the coin on the order page. Start a stablecoin swap.
