How to Swap Bitcoin to Monero Privately (Step by Step)
Swapping Bitcoin for Monero is one of the most common private swaps. Bitcoin transactions are fully visible on a public ledger, while Monero hides senders, receivers and amounts by default. Here is how to do it carefully.
Why swap BTC to XMR?
On Bitcoin, anyone who learns one of your addresses can follow the transaction history connected to it. Monero uses ring signatures, stealth addresses and confidential transactions, so outsiders cannot easily see who paid whom or how much. Many people use XMR when they want financial privacy for savings or payments.
Step 1: Set up a Monero wallet
You need a wallet you control. Official options include the Monero GUI and CLI wallets, plus well-known mobile wallets such as Cake Wallet or Monerujo. Write your seed phrase on paper, store it offline, and never share it with anyone, including support staff.
Step 2: Copy your Monero receiving address
A standard Monero address is long and starts with 4 or 8. Copy it with the wallet's copy button instead of retyping it. After pasting it into the swap form, compare the first and last characters with your wallet.
Step 3: Choose the pair and amount
Select BTC as the coin you send and XMR as the coin you get. Enter the amount of Bitcoin. You will see an estimated amount of Monero. Swaps have a minimum amount, so if the form shows a hint, adjust your amount.
Step 4: Add an optional refund address
If something goes wrong, the refund address is where your Bitcoin goes back. Use a Bitcoin address from a wallet you control, not an exchange deposit address.
Step 5: Send the exact Bitcoin amount
The order page shows a deposit address, a QR code, the exact amount, and a countdown. Send from your own wallet before the timer runs out. Do not send from an exchange withdrawal if you can avoid it, because exchanges sometimes batch or delay payments and you may miss the window.
Step 6: Wait for confirmations and payout
The status moves through deposit, confirming, exchanging, sending and complete. Bitcoin confirmations take time, depending on network congestion and your fee. Monero then needs a number of blocks before your wallet shows the funds as spendable, which takes around 20 minutes.
Tips for better privacy
- Use a new Monero address for each swap (wallets can generate subaddresses).
- Avoid linking the swap to your real identity by reusing addresses across services.
- Do not post your swap ID or addresses publicly.
